Sakai 21 - Hypothesis: What is the Hypothesis tool?

Important: The Hypothesis annotation feature will no longer be available for Sakai course sites after June 30, 2023. More details are available in this KnowledgeBase article.

What is the Hypothesis tool?

Hypothesis is an external tool that allows for collaborative annotation of documents and web pages. Unlike other tools that are typically added to the tool menu of a course site, the Hypothesis tool is added in the form of discrete annotation assignments on Lessons pages. To learn why instructors might use Hypothesis and to view examples of its use, refer to the Hypothes.is on Sakai page of the PLU Instructional Technologies site. A more detailed overview of Hypothesis is available on the Hypothesis site:  Overview of the Hypothesis System.

To annotate a PDF with the Hypothesis tool it must have Optical Character Recognition (OCR). If the PDF text can be highlighted, it has OCR. Otherwise, to add OCR refer to How do I convert a scanned PDF so that it has text to be annotated?
