How do I enter and/or edit grades in Gradebook?

Manually add items directly within the Gradebook interface.

NoteGrades that are being sent to the Gradebook from other tools, such as Assignments or Tests & Quizzes, are managed within their respective tools. You do not need to enter or edit them via the Gradebook.

Go to Gradebook.

Select Gradebook from the Tool Menu of your site.

Search or filter your list of students. (Optional)

Gradebook displays a list of all the students enrolled and active in your site. You can also filter the Gradebook to view students by the following:

  1. Open the Sections/Groups menu to filter by a section or group.
  2. Enter information in the Filter students field to search for students by key word.

Click a cell and enter a grade.

Click within a cell to enter a grade. When clicked, the cell contents will change to show a score entry field.

To exit the cell, click another cell, use the Enter/Return key on your keyboard, or use the up or down keys on your keyboard.

Note: Items with the tool icon in the column header and grayed-out padlock icons in the cells (highlighted in yellow in the image above) are being sent to the Gradebook from other tools. You cannot edit those grades from the Gradebook, although you can view them from here.

Confirm the grade.

When you enter a grade into a cell, a green check mark will appear to indicate that the system has automatically saved the grade.

Set a score for empty cells. (Optional)

Set a score for all empty cells for a specific Gradebook item using Set Score for Empty Cells option. This is fast method of grading students that have not completed a course component.

  1. Click the arrow icon (Open menu).
  2. Click Set Score for Empty Cells.

  1. Enter a score in the Grade Override field.
  2. Click Done.

Caution: Set Score for Empty Cells cannot be undone. If you've used the feature in error, it is still possible to manually adjust scores.

View the grade log.

View the grade log to see the grading history for particular cell.

  1. Click the arrow icon (Open menu).
  2. Click Grade Log.

The grade log shows any changes to student score, including the date and time of the change, as well as the change in score and the username of the user that made the change.

Add/edit comments for a grade.

  1. Click the arrow icon (Open menu).
  2. Click Add/Edit Comment.

  1. Enter text in the Comments field.
  2. Click Save Comment.
