How do I copy my content from one site to another?

When you create new Sakai courses, you may want to copy content such as Lesson pages, Resources, Announcements, and Assignments from older courses into your new course.

Watch the following video to learn how to copy content from one site to another, or refer to the instructions below.

Prerequisites.

First, you'll need to have the role of "Instructor" in the course you want to copy content from. And second, in your new course, be sure you have enabled the right tools for the various types of content you want to import. See the Sakai help document How do I choose which tools will be available in my course? for instructions on enabling course tools.

Navigate to the site where you would like to copy the content.

Select the Site Info tool in the Tool Menu.

Select the Site Info tool in the Tool Menu.

Select the Import from Site button.

Click the "I would like to merge my data" link.

For most situations, we recommend clicking the second option: "I would like to merge my data." This preserves any content you already have added to your new course while merging it with content from your older course. Note that the first option, "I would like to replace my data," can be a destructive process, destroying content you may have already placed in your site.

Tip: If you don't have existing content that you mind overwriting and if you do want to import Gradebook settings, you could choose the "replace my data" link instead.

Select the course you want to copy from.

Click Continue.

Click Continue.

Choose the content you would like to copy.

You may select content from all of the tools or a subset of tools if you prefer. A tool must be active in both the source and destination sites in order for its corresponding content to be copied. For instance, only tools that are active in the current site are shown in the listing depicted above. So if you wanted to import Lessons tool content from another site, you must have the Lessons tool active in the current site. If it's active, it would be listed. Otherwise, you would need to activate it per the instructions in How do I choose which tools will be available in my course? Furthermore, note that if a tool selection box is grayed out (and un-checkable) in the listing, that means that the tool is not active in the other site.

Click Finish.

Click Finish.

Once you have made your tool selections, click Finish to complete the import.

Note: The content import process may take a while depending on how much content you have. Please wait for the process to finish.
