Sakai Advisory for Instructors: Changes to the Default Grading Schema

Sakai Advisory for Instructors: Changes to the Default Grading Schema

For Sakai course sites created on August 20, 2021 and thereafter, the default values for the Grading Schema, “Letter Grades with +/-,” in the Settings tab of Sakai Gradebook will align with new Grading Scale guidelines in Faculty Resources (effective Fall 2021). The table below depicts this change, comparing the former and new grading schema values in Sakai. Besides the changes to the minimum percentage values for some of the letter grades, note that letter grade for ‘A+’ has been removed, and the former letter grade ‘F’ is now presented as ‘E’.

As part of the general process for setting up one’s Gradebook, instructors can revise the Grading Schema values to implement their preferred scale. Many faculty and some departments have created their own grading scales, based on disciplinary and pedagogical standards and update these values in Sakai to reflect their own expectations. Furthermore, Grading Scale values are copied (preserved) from a prior course site when Gradebook content is selected as part of the standard course content copying process.

As stated in the Grading Scale guidelines in Faculty Resources, the new default grading scale values serve as a guideline; they are by no means a requirement. Furthermore, any changes made to the grading schema for a course site in Sakai for a particular semester are not retroactive or applicable to prior semesters in which a given grading schema was implemented.
