Sakai 23 - Tests & Quizzes: How do I use an exception to reopen a test or quiz for one or more students after its due date?

How do I use an exception to reopen a test or quiz for one or more students after its due date?

An instructor can reopen a published assessment for an individual student or a group of students by creating an exception for the published copy of the assessment. The exception will take effect when the instructor saves the revised settings in the published copy of the assessment.

Note: If the original assessment was timed via the Set a Time Limit controls, the assessment would have automatically submitted when the time limit expired or due date passed, whichever came first. In this case, there is no way to resume the assessment where the student left off. The instructor can grant a retake, although that would require the student to repeat the whole assessment.

To reopen the assessment making it available immediately:

Configure the exception for an individual student or group of students by entering a new due date while leaving the ‘available’ date blank. Once the settings are saved in the published copy of the assessment, the assessment will be available to the student or group of students.

To have the students’ exception submissions marked as ‘LATE’ in the Test & Quizzes scoring view, leave the due date blank and instead enter a ‘Late submissions accepted until’ date.

To schedule the assessment to be available at a specific time:

The assessment can be reopened with a completely new time frame for taking the assessment. Configure the exception for an individual student or group of students by entering new available and due dates that are in the future. After the settings are saved in the published copy of the assessment, the student or group of students will have access to the assessment at the available date and time.

Optionally, you can also set a Late Submission Deadline date (this date must be later than the Due Date). Any submissions between the Due Date and Late Submission Deadline date will be marked as ‘LATE’ in the Test & Quizzes scoring view.

Tests & Quizzes Exception settings:

Create an Exception for User or Exception for Group. Configure it and then click Add new Exception.

The exception to be added then displays. Take note of its configuration, and if it matches your intent, click Save.

If the student or group of students had not previously started the assessment, the exception can also include an optional Time Limit.

Warning: If the student or any of the group of students had previously started the assessment, do not configure the exception with a Time Limit. The Time Limit would use the student’s original start time causing the exception to be already expired or nearly expired as soon as the student resumes the assessment.
