How do I grade an assignment?

This article describes how to grade an assignment using the new grading interface. The older grading interface is now referred to as 'legacy'. Use of the new grading interface is optional. You may use either and switch between them as necessary. For further information on the two grading interfaces, see How do the new and legacy grading interfaces differ?  Refer to How do I grade an assignment using the legacy grading interface? for instructions on grading with the legacy interface.

This article also assumes that the assignment is not graded with a rubric. For specific details on how to grade assignments with a rubric, refer also to either How do I grade an assignment using a rubric? or How do I grade an assignment using a rubric in the legacy grading interface?

Note that you can also use the grading tools in Turnitin Feedback Studio, or you can grade assignments offline, per the steps described in How do I download assignments for grading offline? and How do I upload graded assignment submissions and feedback?

Go to Assignments.

Select the Assignments tool from the Tool Menu in your site.

Select the assignment to grade.

Click the Grade option associated with an assignment.

Note: If you did not choose a grading scale for the assignment, View Submissions will be displayed to you rather than Grade.

Check the box next to 'Use new grading interface' to grade submissions.

Tip: If you open a submission to grade and don't see the new interface, try deselecting and then reselecting Use new grading interface.

Select a student to grade.

Select a student to grade by clicking on their ID in the Student column.

View the student's inline submission, if available.

  1. Click Inline Submission to display the student's inline submission in the gradable area.
  2. The student's inline submission displays in the gradable area.

View the student's submitted attachment, if available.

  1. Click the attachment link to open it within the grader.
  2. View the attached submission in the gradable area.

Click the Grade Submission button.

Enter a grade.

Enter the score for the student's assignment in the Grade field. The maximum available points display to you next to the Grade field.

Or, grade with a rubric. (Optional)

Enter summary comments. (Optional)

To add summarizing feedback for the student, click Add Summary Comments.

  1. Enter comments using the Rich Text Editor.
  2. Click Done.

Add a feedback attachment. (Optional)

To add a file attachment as part of feedback that will be available to the student, click Add Attachments and then attach a file from your device.

Add private notes. (Optional)

Click Private Notes to include additional information about your feedback for other instructors or TAs to view, but that will not be visible to the student,

  1. Enter comments using the Rich Text Editor.
  2. Click Done.

Allow resubmissions.

If you would like to allow the student to resubmit the assignment, check the Allow Resubmission box and specify the number of resubmissions allowed and the date until which they will be accepted.

Note: If you allowed resubmissions on the assignment when you created it, this information will be prepopulated with the default resubmission information for this assignment. Override the default resubmission settings for an individual student by changing the information in the Allow Resubmission area.

Save the score and feedback.

  1. Click Save & Don’t Release to save the grade and feedback. This option does not release the grade to the student.
  2. Or, click Save & Release to immediately release the grade and feedback to the student.

Tip: Some instructors prefer to release all of the grades and feedback at one time after they have finished entering grades for the entire class. See How do I release assignment grades? for more information about releasing all grades and feedback at one time.

Customize the grader navigation settings. (Optional)

Optionally, click the gear icon (Grader Settings) to customize the navigation settings so as speed up grading tasks.

  1. Use Navigate between students with submissions only while navigating.
  2. Use Graded Status to Show all submissions, Only show ungraded submissions, or Only show graded submissions while navigating.
  3. Use Select a group to view submissions from a specific group or from the entire site while navigating.
