HandBrake: Compressing Video

Encoding a video with HandBrake will always compress the size of the file. If a video file is too large, encode it with HandBrake. Handbrake is available on computers in the Library Design Lab and Wiegand Design Lab, and can be installed onto personal computers. Full Guide: View/Download
To compress a video:
  1. Launch HandBrake. A pop-up will appear.
  • Alternatively, if HandBrake is already open, click Open Source to the top-left.
  • Locate the desired video to be converted.
  • Click Open.

  • Click the Format drop-down and select .MP4.
  • (Optional) Click the Preset drop-down and select the desired quality. Fast 1080p30 is suitable in most cases. A lower quality may be necessary to compress the video to the desired file size.
  • Rename the file in the Save As text field to the bottom-left. Do not delete the file type (.mp4).
  • Click Browse to the bottom-right to set the desired storage location.
  • Click the circular, green Start button to the top of the window. The encoding process will begin and the status will appear at the bottom of the window.
  • If the new video file still isnt small enough, select a lower quality preset in HandBrake and encode again. Be aware that reducing the quality will affect the way the video looks.
