How does Discussions tally Read statistics?

The Discussions tool counts a post as having been read by the student if the entirety of the post within a conversation has been displayed to them. However, like any content that might be opened or displayed, this does not mean that the content was actually 'read'.

Therefore, instructors are encouraged not to focus much on the "Read", "Unread", and "Percent Read" tallies in the Discussions grading views. Instead, when evaluating a student's participation in a forum or topic, instructors would be better equipped to focus on the student's written (authored) content-- from which an instructor might get a more accurate sense of how carefully a student had read others' posts.
