WordPress: Getting Started
WordPress, version 5.7. The instructions in this guide apply to sites built with the PLU Digital Humanities Lab version of WordPress and may not translate to sites built with WordPress.com or other versions.
A few types of WordPress sites are available. The process for logging into and setting up a site will depend on the type of site being used.
WordPress.org / PLU Digital Humanities Lab
WordPress.org is the official WordPress site, and provides access to the WordPress software that can be used to build a self-hosted website. The PLU Digital Humanities Lab has limited WordPress.org hosting available. Interested faculty can contact itech@plu.edu for more information. We recommend the DH Lab version of WordPress for websites built as part of a class. All DH Lab WordPress sites have ".pludhlab.org" in the URL. Students who are assigned a DH Lab WordPress site will be issued a URL along the lines of [sitename].pludhlab.org, such as: "myportfolio.pludhlab.org".
To login to the WP Admin dashboard, which is where all site building takes place, navigate to [sitename].pludhlab.org/wp-admin and login with the credentials provided by your instructor. Going to WordPress.com will not work.
WordPress.com
Free WordPress websites can be created at WordPress.com. These sites are primarily used for personal projects and portfolios, and have less features than WordPress.org or DH Lab sites. The URL of Websites hosted in this version will include [sitename].wordpress.com, such as: myportfolio.wordpress.com.
All instructions in this guide apply to the WP Admin dashboard. To access this view in a WordPress.com site, click WP Admin from the bottom of the menu to the left.
