iMovie: Adding Transitions

iMovie, Version: 10.1.8. Be aware that different versions of iMovie will vary in appearance and functionality. Full Guide: View/Download

A transition is an effect that can be used to stitch clips together. Transitions are used in various ways, such as to tell the audience that there has been a change in scenes or a jump in time. Avoid using flashy or obvious transitions as they are distracting to the audience. The most effective and widely used video transitions are Cross Dissolve, Cross Blur, Fade to Black, and Fade to White.

To add a transition between two clips:
  1. Navigate to the Transitions tab, located above the Browser.
  2. Preview the Transition options by hovering over them and scrubbing left/right. A preview will appear in the Viewer.
  3. Click-and-drag the desired transition to the Timeline and place it between two visual clips.

To change the duration of the Transition, double-click the transition icon in the Timeline and type in a desired length in seconds. Be aware that the length of a transition cannot exceed the original length of the clips. For example, if a clip is only 5 seconds long, a transition lasting 10 seconds will not be possible. If an error message pops up, length the clip or shorten the transition duration.

To fade a clip in/out, use the fade handles at the beginning and end of the clip (see iMovie: Basic Editing for more details).
