WeVideo: Adding Effects & Adjustments

WeVideo, 2022. Be aware that different versions of WeVideo will vary in appearance and functionality.

Video, photo, and text clips can be modified in a variety of ways. The Clip Editor can be used for basic adjustments, the opacity can be modified to change the transparency, and effects are available in the FX menu.

Expand each section below to see its content.

To open the Clip Editor and make basic adjustments:

  1. Click to select the desired clip in the Timeline. A pop-up will appear above the clip.
  2. Click the Clip Editor button, which is the first option in the pop-up and looks like a small pencil. The Clip Editor window will open.
  • If a hamburger (three line) button appears above the clip, hover over it to display all options.
  • Alternatively, double-click the clip to open the Clip Editor.

  • Adjust as desired. Be aware that different types of clips (video, photo, text) will have different options available. Options may include:
    • Transform: rotate, flip, rescale, and reposition the clip.
    • Crop: crop the video or image to any size.
    • Volume: change the volume level, and add a fade to the start/end.
    • Animation: add an animation, such as a zoom or fade, to the start and end of the clip.
    • Color Keying: select a color to remove. This is useful for green-screening.
    • Color: adjust the brightness, contrast, saturation, hue, temperature, and tint.
    • Speed: adjust the duration of the clip via the range and value.

  • When done, click Save Changes.
  • To reset each tab to default settings, click the trash can icon to the top-right.

To reset an individual option, click the reset button to the right of the setting.

To change the opacity, or transparency, of a clip:
    1. Select the clip in the Timeline. A pop-up will appear above the clip.
    2. Click the Opacity Options button, which is the second option in the pop-up. The opacity options will open.
    • If a hamburger (three line) button appears above the clip, hover over it to display all options.
      opacity popup
  • Adjust the opacity as desired.
    • Animating/keyframing: click-and-drag the dots, or keyframes, on the horizontal green line up-or-down to increase/decrease the opacity. A keyframe is like a snapshot of the opacity at a single moment; when multiple keyframes are at different levels, WeVideo automatically transitions the opacity between them. Click on the opacity line to create additional keyframes, and double-click keyframes to delete.
    • Fading: check the Fade box to automatically generate a fade-in and fade-out with keyframes. Enter the number of seconds for each in the In and Out fields.
    • Turn off opacity controls: click the toggle to turn opacity controls on/off.
Adjusting the opacity of a clip to 0% will make the clip invisible, but any associated audio will still play.

To apply a filter effect to a visual clip:
    1. Select the clip in the Timeline. A pop-up will appear above the clip.
      fx button
    2. Click the FX button. The Effects window will appear.
    • If a hamburger (three line) button appears above the clip, hover over it to display all options.
      effects window
  • Hover over the effects to see a preview comparison of before and after the effect is applied.
  • Click to select the desired effects. Multiple effects can be selected.
  • Under Apply Effect(s) On, select an option (This Clip Only, or All Clips).
  • Click Apply. The selected effect(s) will be applied.
  • To remove an effect, reopen the Effects window, deselect the effect, and click Apply.
