Photoshop is a digital photo-editing and painting software. Use Photoshop to transform images and create artwork. Be aware that different versions of Photoshop will vary in appearance and functionality. This is a professional piece of software and has a pretty steep learning curve to use.

Non-Destructive Editing

When editing an image in Photoshop, its important to backup the original image to avoid permanent changes to it. This is part of a number of practices known as non-destructive editing. When an image is opened in Photoshop for editing, immediately save it as a Photoshop Document (.psd). If you save directly to the image, edits will be non-reversible.

Raster Graphics

Adobe Photoshop creates and edits raster graphics. Raster images (also known as bitmaps) are comprised of tiny blocks of color called pixels. When zoomed in, individual pixels can be seen forming a grid that, when zoomed out, create an image. The effect is like a pointillist painting; mere dots of color up close, but combining together to make an image from a distance. Be careful when resizing these images in Photoshop, as pixelation is a potential problem with all raster-based images.
