Zoom: Participating in a Meeting

Zoom web conferencing, 2021. Be aware that different versions of Zoom will vary in appearance and functionality.

After joining a meeting, configure settings, such as the microphone and camera, as desired with the options to the bottom of the window.

During a meeting, collaboration tools and settings are accessed from the bottom of the window. Hosts may have different tools available than participants, and hosts may choose which tools participants have access to. Features such as whiteboarding and polling are enabled in the users Settings (see Zoom: Settings and Enabling Features for more details).

Mute/Unmute Microphone: mute/unmute the mic. We recommend muting your mic while other participants are speaking, to avoid causing any distracting noises. Click the up arrow to configure the microphone, such as to select a different device.

Start/Stop Video: turn the camera off/on. Click the up arrow to configure the camera, such as to select a different device or webcam.

Security (host only): In-meeting security options, such as locking the meeting, enabling a Waiting Room, and adjusting permissions for participants.

Participants: opens a list of participants and various options. Hosts will have different options than participants, such as Mute, Allow Record, etc. If the Waiting Room is enabled, participants can be admitted into the meeting here. The Raise Hand option will appear here for participants. If Nonverbal Feedback is enabled on the hosts account, participants will have response options such as Yes, No, etc (see Zoom: Settings and Enabling Features for more details).

Chat: text chat. Hosts can set participants to communicate with each other, no one, or the host only.

Share Screen:  broadcast your computer screen to participants. Individual programs and windows, or the entire screen, can be shared. This feature may not be available to participants, depending on the host's settings (hosts can allow participants to share screens in their users Settings (see Zoom: Settings and Enabling Features for more details). If whiteboarding is enabled, it will be an option here.

Polling (hosts only): this option will only appear 1) if you're using a Zoom Pro account, 2) Polling has been enabled in user settings, and 3) a poll has been previously set up for this meeting. See Zoom: Polling (Hosts Only) for more details about polling.

Record: capture the meeting as a video recording (see Zoom: Recording a Meeting for more details).

Breakout Rooms (hosts only): allows the host to separate participants into individual sessions, which is helpful for group work. See Zoom: Breakout Rooms (Hosts Only) for more details.

Reactions: send a positive emoji reaction.

More: Broadcasting options, such as Facebook and YouTube Live.

End/Leave Meeting: click to exit the meeting.

Gallery View (Viewing Multiple Participants Simultaneously)

To view the video feeds from all of the participants simultaneously:
  1. Open the Zoom Client and start a meeting (previously scheduled or on-the-fly).
  2. Click the up arrow next to the video controls to the bottom-left, and select Video Settings. A new window will appear.
  3. In the Meetings section, check the box for Display up to 49 participants per screen in Gallery View.
  4. Close the window when done.
From now on, participants will show up in a gallery grid during a meeting. If there are more than 49 participants, another page will be created.

Private Chat

Hosts can send one-on-one message to participants in the Manage Participants tool. Hosts can also allow/prevent participants to privately chat with each other in their user Settings (see Zoom: Settings and Enabling Features for more details).
